Part I. Introduction:
Starting points and background knowledge.
This is an activity for
all teaching staff. The following questions will be placed in a basket. Each
teacher will draw one or more question(s) from the basket to answer from his/her
personal experience. Discussion may follow as appropriate as teachers bring to
light things they already know and things they want to learn about the day’s
objectives.
Questions:
1. Describe a time you felt
uncomfortable with your class because of a reading issue (or issues) within the
class.
2. Name an activity you used
in your class for reading that used more than the sense of sight.
3. Describe a student you’ve
had who seemed to learn differently from other students.
4. What do you think of when
you hear the word dyslexia?
5. What are some methods you
use in the classroom to determine reading level?
6. What does the word
“fluency” mean to you?
7. Give an example of in
informal assessment you have used that was good.
8. Give an example of something
you’ve done in the classroom that was not helpful, or that was confusing to the
students.
9. What’s one method you use
to get all of your students to read?
10. How do you make the
classroom environment comfortable when you have students on different levels in
the same class?
